1.1. Arashiyama Yukata Rental Spot on Rainy Days: Daikaku-ji Temple
Daikaku-ji Temple was originally built as a detached palace for Emperor Saga during the early Heian period. You might recognize it as a location for historical dramas. The Osa
waya Pond, which is the oldest pond garden in Japan, is known to have been a place where Heian nobles enjoyed boating. Even on rainy days, you can appreciate the scenery here.
The covered corridors, called “Murasame-no-Rōka” (Corridor of Drizzling Rain), connect various halls and were built with low ceilings to prevent people from swinging swords or spears. These architectural details add to the historical ambiance.
At Daikaku-ji Temple, you can immerse yourself in history and find numerous points of interest throughout the temple grounds. You can comfortably enjoy sightseeing in your yukata, even on rainy days.
On your way back from Daikaku-ji Temple to Arashiyama Station, consider having lunch at Coffee Shop Yamamoto. Established in 1969, it has a retro exterior and a cozy interior atmosphere. The cafe offers a delightful morning ham toast, as well as French toast soaked thoroughly in syrup, a mouthwatering pink beef cutlet sandwich, and house-roasted coffee that’s worth trying.
1.2. Arashiyama Yukata Rental Spot on Rainy Days: Tenryu-ji Temple
On your way back, why not pick up some cute original souvenirs at the “Café Goods Specialty Store” next to the cafe?
Arashiyama Rainy Day Kimono Rental Spot: Kyoto Arashiyama Organ Museum
The “Kyoto Arashiyama Organ Museum” is located just a 5-minute walk from the Keifuku Arashiyama Station, making it a convenient distance to walk even on rainy days. Once inside the museum, you can enjoy yourself regardless of the weather, whether it’s a light drizzle or heavy rain.
The museum displays over 150 rare antique organs, including the “World’s Oldest Organ” made by Swiss watchmaker Antoine Favre in 1796. Additionally, there is an organ shop inside where you can even create your own custom organ music box!
After exploring the museum, consider taking a break in the cafe space on the first floor. They have set times for antique organ performances, allowing you to relax and enjoy desserts or light meals while listening to beautiful music.
Arashiyama Rainy Day Kimono Rental Spot: Kimono Forest
The Keifuku Dentetsu Arashiyama Line, also known as the “Randen,” has been gaining attention as a trendy spot within the Arashiyama Station premises. Among them, “Kimono Forest,” which was introduced during the renovation in July 2013, features approximately 600 poles adorned with Kyoto Yuzen fabrics, creating a beautiful fusion of traditional and modern Japanese aesthetics throughout the station platform and along the tracks.
This design was created by the renowned interior designer Kyotsugu Morita.
Even on rainy days, you can visit with an umbrella, and it’s a perfect spot for those wearing kimonos. In the center of the path lies the “Ryuo Atago Pond,” a popular power spot where it’s believed that dipping your hand in the water will bring happiness.
On your way from Kimono Forest toward Togetsukyo Bridge, you’ll find the popular foot bath cafe called “Arayu.” It’s only a 1-minute walk from Arashiyama Station, so it’s a great option even on rainy days!
The foot bath features a variety of colorful flowers, making it a luxurious experience while wearing a kimono. After the foot bath, you can also enjoy a foot massage, providing relaxation for your tired feet after exploring the area.
Of course, they offer a cafe menu as well, so treat yourself to some sweets after your visit!
