How to use the toilet in kimono as taught by people in Kyoto
In this article, we introduce how to use the restroom without ruining your kimono or yukata after renting one in Kyoto.
Once you’ve rented a kimono in Kyoto, it would be a hassle if it got disheveled during sightseeing.
If you’re wondering how to manage the restroom while wearing a rented kimono, this article is for you.
Illustrated Guide! How to Use the Restroom in a Kimono Without Disheveling It
- Lift each layer of the kimono one by one
- Lift everything up in one swift motion
- Gently rearrange the kimono and check if the obi (belt) is crushed
The key is to handle the kimono carefully to prevent disheveling. After using the restroom, the ohashori (excess fabric tucked under the obi) might flip out, or the obi might get crushed.
When touring Kyoto, it’s common to see people with crushed obis or raised ohashoris, so be careful!
Make sure your ohashori doesn’t flip out and ruin the perfect picture you’ve taken in your cute outfit.
How to Fix Disheveling After Using the Restroom
Too Much Ohashori Exposed
If the ohashori is too long, adjust it by tucking a little under the obi.
Don’t rush; you can fix it calmly.
Obi is Crushed
If the obi is crushed, gently insert your hand behind it and puff out the dent to fix the flatness.
